Christmas Clown by Sandra Galda

Christmas Clown by Sandra Galda
4"x4" oil on gessoed masonite

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Christmas Clown is a board small painting. This little guy has turned up on our tree for many many years. We used to have lots of child-like wooden ornaments hanging on our trees each year. This year, the wooden ornaments and our kid's Hallmark collectible ornaments are on a separate kids tree in our good parlor. Old glass ornaments are on our family tree in the family room. This approach makes two very different themed trees in our home. Mixed together or not, all the ornaments are so special.

in process: Apple Pie Supply by Sandra Galda (NA)

Here is an 8"x10" oil I am working in the midst of some uncooperative weather...ice storms that have wiped out electricity in our area. We now have power, but soooooooo many still do not. I hope to finish this in the next day or so. Baking must be really on my mind....I am both baking and painting about baking....Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas everyone! If you are interested please contact me by email on this one. It is not done yet though---clip is still visible at top right. Below is the easel set up I am using.

The above photo shows my current set up---I have clips holding the small works to a portable easel that clamps onto my big oak easel. The big oak easel holds a larger painting that takes way longer to complete while I do the small ones. When I want to resume working on the larger--wha-la--I just pop off the portable easel.

Cold December Granny (NA)

Cold December Granny by Sandra Galda
5"x5" oil on gessoboard

This looks like the standard "perfect" granny smith apples that can be found round here in December. You know, in a plastic bag, all alike and perfect...but kind of stiff and too perfect. Not at all like the specimens our apple trees produced this year in our yard...they were pretty unusual. to purchase, contact my email sgalda@aol.com

The Christmas sets!

These are the two "completed " sets. (meaning good enough for its purpose, not a formal museum painting!). The color is slightly off due to the digitals and the limited lighting---I plan on taking more pics once they are set up under the stage lights. I am so glad to be done. Spent two total weeks, Mon.-fri., on these, about 3-4 hours a day. They are over 8 feet tall, and each one is three panels of 50 inches wide(12.5 feet wide). They are painted with an air brush and compressor. This kind of church work makes it really feel like Christmas time for me! So much fun!!! well, must begin to think of the small works for which this blog is supposed to be about!

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

I have not been doing the small oils for daily practice because I have been consumed with designing and painting two very LARGE stage set works using an air-brush for a Christmas concert/play. It has been a daily exercise, though very large! I have done sets like these many times before in several locations. It is always fulfilling and exciting see them used in a practical way, setting an environment within which a story is acted or sung out. The image posted above is one of the two sets. Will be back to small daily oil painting soon!

(NA)

I have been so consumed with preparing the large oil paintings for the Nov. show, that I have set aside smaller works. Here is one I started today, but it is not finished. Since I have not posted in a while, I thought I would post it in its not quite finished state. It is coming along nicely, but needs more work done. I just love the transparency of the bottles. It is a puzzle to figure out the reflections. I will post it again when it is really finished. Oil, 9"x12"

Three Pumpkins Sketch (NA)

Between traveling out of town, hosting a visit here with Grammy, and preparing some larger oil paintings for a show, I have been slow with the small works. I attempted painting a pumpkin yesterday, but it is not as nice as this little sketch I did a week ago. I hope to post another small oil sometime soon. Until then this will have to do!

The Edge of Corn

The Edge of Corn by Sandra Galda
4"x4" oil on masonite

I have been so busy doing larger works that I have neglected the small daily practice oils. Well, here is one finally! It is from a corn field in NH I drove by last week. The metal clip holding it to the easel is showing at the top right. .

Pear (sold)

Pear by Sandra Galda
4"x4" oil on gesso board

I have been busy with larger works, but returning to a small oil is such fun and great practice. It is fulfilling to complete a work in an hour or so. This has never happened to me while trying to paint a larger landscape.... :)

Teacup and Hug (NA)

Teacup and Hug by Sandra Galda
5"x5" oil on gesso board

This was really fun and surprisingly easy to paint due to the similar tones on the cup, the scrabble pieces and the surface they rest upon. I think if I had made the shadows a bit more purple, the contrast could have been more pleasing. Time for a tea break!

Allspice (NA)

Allspice by Sandra Galda
4"x4" oil on gesso board

I tried to keep this image a little looser. I use this spice for baking, particularly in the fall and winter! Recieved a nice fine pointed brush and an artist's field box full of tubes of oil paint at a garage sale last weekend. My hubby bought it all for very little money, thank you honey!!! It was a wonderful find-someones junk is often another's treasure!!! Sorry, I caught the metal clip on the upper right hand corner again-My son has this one in his new apartment kitchen.

Three Strawberries (NA)

I worked on this 8"x10" image again, started it a while ago. I always find the seeds are really challenging, best solved with a simple approach.

Domino Skyscrapers

Domino Skyscrapers by Sandra Galda
4"x4" oil on gessobord
I was away at a family wedding and some family visiting. Now back and here is a quick painting of dominos. My daughter suggested them as a subject for a small painting. They remind me of skyscrapers and buildings!

Pear and Cherries (NA)

Pears and Cherries (NA)
5"x7" oil on gessoed paper

Pears and Cherries are my favorite subject right now for daily practice. I think by adding the white napkin, the image comes closer to a traditional still life arrangement rather than just a daily practice image. Contact my email for purchase, sgalda@aol.com

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Here we are a little further along. Each painting is like a little battleground; all parts are clamouring for something, all fighting and disagreeing, until I put the biggest conundrums to rest.
I have more conundrums to contend with here.............

strawberry painting in process

Hi! I thought it may be interesting to post the process of my current painting. Some day I will attempt posting a mini movie clip of the process as other daily painters do. I really enjoy seeing the stages I and other artists go through to produce the images. It is like a birth, or as my son described, "It is like watching a movie, only its really SLOW......."

Reclining Corn

Reclining Corn by Sandra Galda
5"x7" oil on canvas
This is my first art blogging post!  I am doing small works as I complete and edit my master's thesis. I begin with what I am currently doing in art.  I have done many works previous to this over the years as an artist, maybe some day I will include some of those items.
